The Early Grade Reading Barometer (EGRB) is a collection of early grade reading assessment data from around the world where users can view how children are performing on reading assessments in their country.

EGRB Heuristic Evaluation
In 2020, I conducted a heuristic evaluation of the Early Grade Reading Barometer website to assess its usability and identify opportunities for improvement. The resulting report provided actionable design recommendations that served as a foundation for a potential site redesign. The evaluation successfully demonstrated the need for key updates, supporting the case for enhancing the site's overall user experience.

EGRB Redesign
As the User Experience Lead for the website redesign, I guided the strategic planning and execution of the site's structure and usability. Following a comprehensive content audit, I developed the information architecture and navigation framework, which we validated through tree testing to ensure intuitive user pathways.

Key objectives for the redesign included:

Align the site with USAID’s brand identity

Enable users to easily locate reading assessment results by country

Present data charts in a clean, accessible format

Use plain language to clearly explain reading assessment data

We implemented layered navigation and breadcrumbs with clear indicators so users were aware of their location within the site
Data charts met accessibility standards and have the ability to be viewed as a chart or table

One-click citation for researchers utilizing the site in their research

A highlight of the redesign was the integration of an interactive slider on the homepage, designed to visually represent how reading assessments are measured. As users move the slider, the reading passage progressively fills in, illustrating the development of reading proficiency across different assessment levels. This feature was created to offer an engaging, intuitive way for users to understand the progression of literacy skills.
